At 0510 hrs June 4th 1942, a PBY.5 (cal sign ‘AV58’) of VP-23 and under the command of Lt. Howard Ady USN, spotted a Japanese scout aircraft from one of the carriers heading for Midway. At 0530 hrs they located the carrier force. Seconds later Lt. Ady’s radio operator sent this message: “Enemy Carriers!”.

On Oct 14th 1943 the US 8th AF returned from a mission to Schwienfurt. ‘Cat ‘o 9 Tails’, was unable to find any airfield and running low on fuel, the crew baled out over Aylesbury. The aircraft glided on auto pilot, landing in Riseley, Bedford.
